LATE NIGHT THOUGHTS OF A MILITARY MOTHER BY
SYLVIA
Don't ask how I feel
For I really don't know
I have only one heart
And only one soul
I can't use them up
Not now, not yet
We're in for the long haul
On that you can bet
Don't ask me about
The pride that I feel
I still have days
When it doesn't seem real
Don't ask if my heart
Skips a beat at the sound
Of the news that another
Helicopter is down
Part of me is filled
With such strong pride
Another part says
God's not on just one side
We support our troops
So young and so strong
In a flurry of flags
And patriotic songs
We support our troops
We support their wives
We'll support them as
They lose their lives
But most will come home
Most will survive
They won't be the same
But they will be alive
When they come down with ailments
No doctor can name
Will we still hire them
Just the same?
When they struggle with missing limbs
Glass eyes and wheelchairs
Will they have to contend
With our curious stares?
When we see some with minds
That simply won't mend
How will we remember
Our veterans then?
