68W Combat Medic

When did your soldier attend?

Fall 2007-Spring 2008

Where was he stationed for AIT?

Ft. Sam Houston, Texas

How long was his AIT?

16 weeks

What was his training like? Normal schedule? Did he train on weekends? Late at night? Classroom or field based?

DH said that his training was pretty tough. He had a pretty normal schedual through out his training, and he some times had to train on weekends. They had late night exersises closer to the end of AIT, DH called it FTX training, & they did that for an entire week. At the begining of AIT most of the training was classroom work, then as the weeks went by it shifted towards field based training. This is so they would know what to do in a field type situation.

Did you get to see him during AIT?

Since we live close to where the base is located I got to see him quite often, when the money allowed me to make the trip down there.

How often were you able to communicate with him? By phone? Email?

I was able to talk to him quite alot over the phone, since they would alow them to use their cell phones. The only times that we were not able to talk to eachother is when they had a barracks inspection, or when one of us was out of minutes on our phones.

Describe the graduation ceremony.

It was inside one of the nice dinning halls that you could reserve on base. It was also hot with all the people that were in there, plus the heater was running. The best part of it, besides DH walking across the stage was that they sang out one of their cadences when they were marching out of the hall. That was so COOL!

Any other tips or information?

If you are unable to see your DH/DF/DB or what other family member is in the service during this training time, write letters, send them pictures of you, family, friends, of their kids. Those are REALLY important to them! It shows them that they still have your support in this important and hard descision that they made. It lets them know that while they may be apart from their loved ones right now, it tells them that they are not alone.
