FORT
STEWART
Name:
Taylor Harrison
Base Name:
Fort Stewart
Base Location:
Hinesville, GA
How long have you been here?
2006-Present
What is housing like? On post? Off post? Areas to stay
away from?
If you have at least two kids, then odds are you'll be lucky enough to
get into the newly built, beautiful homes which are like
duplex/triplex-style townhouses. As an officer, houses with yards
are available. Unfortunately, if you're enlisted and married w/out
kids, or with just one you chances are high to be placed in the
soon-to-be-condemned apartments. Our building apparently was
originally built during WWII, but they have done lots of interior
upgrading, so now it's pretty decent.
My husband & I are in the process of purchasing a home (5 bedroom, 2
1/2 bath, 1 acre of property) for about $95,000, so offpost offers a lot
of good deals.
Hinesville does not boast a lot of fully safe neighborhoods, so my
recommendation is to stick on-post.
PX & Commissary?
Very nice, not too large though. The commissary does have an
entire bookcase at the entrance devoted to coupons, rather than other
posts I've been to that have them scattered throughout.
Activities on base?
ALWAYS something going on! At the beginning of December they had a
big to-do (Marne week, annual celebration) and they flew in some Miami
Dolphins cheerleaders, Lee Ann Rimes and a few other big namers to help
boost morale.
Active spouse's clubs?
I'm too busy to actively participate just yet, but I did attend the
required meeting and it was ok. Very family oriented, not a whole
lot getting planned for the single soldiers or couples w/out kids.
Things to do in the area?
Walmart is about it, and it's 24hours, so that's convenient.
There's a whole lot of businesses, and a few chain restaurants, but
Hinesville's about 20 minutes from I-95, which is inconvenient
considering that makes Savannah that much farther away. The next
major exit is about 20 miles North on 95, but there's so much more to do
there! Two HUGE malls, every store you could imagine...and about
45 minutes North or South on 95 (from the Ft. Stewart exit) are tons of
beaches. I recommend Jekyll Island for a relaxing time. It's
a private island that's got amazing driftwood, beautiful!
School system?
Don't know from personal experience, but I'm told the schools on post
are great. Off post, not.
Colleges in the area?
There's a community college down the road, and the Army Education Center
is right outside of the main gate. Otherwise I haven't looked into
it yet.
Jobs?
On post FRG helps out with placement, and Ft. Stewart offers regular job
fairs. Off post it's hard to find anything that's going to pay
more than minimum wage ($5.15/hour).
Favorite aspect of base/surrounding city?
Not much to say about Hinesville, but I do like Ft. Stewart. The
convenience of beaches so close, as well as EVERY store imaginable and
downtown Savannah w/in 40 minutes makes it a better location.
Least favorite aspect?
W/out the base, Hinesville wouldn't exist. So the locals aren't
super nice if they aren't military affiliated.
Local tips?
Make friends and socialize! There's lots of great people here to
meet!
