FORT SILL
Your Name (if you would like it to appear):
Base Name:Fort Sill
Base Location: Lawton Oklahoma
How long have you been here? (give years
please, ex. 2003-present) Oct 06 to present
What is housing like? On-post? (waiting list,
conditions, etc.) Off-post? Any areas to stay away from? Average
price to rent or buy? On post housing is actually very nice they
just built a ton of new houses not sure on the waiting list but from
what I have heard it can be from 3 months to a year..Off post
housing varies in price from 350-700 depending on the rental company
(ask around about the company before renting from them we have alot
of bad ones) and the area, you can buy a house here from the low
40's up to 150's
Rate the PX & Commissary. Both really good the
commissary here is usually well stocked best time to go I think is
on Sunday when they open
Activities on base? For the most part I have
noticed they have alot of activities adult and family
Active Spouses Club?
Things to do in area? We have most of the
major restaurants a pretty good mall with a movie complex a few good
stores and two casinos as far as outdoor activities there is a ton
to do here we have an outdoor water park,MT Scott and Medicine Park
which is amazing in the spring we also have Lake Elmer Thomas or
LETRA that has camp grounds etc...Wichita Falls TX is about 40 mins
south and has alot of shopping OKC is about an hour to hour and a
half north depending where you want to go there are several museums
in OKC and a pretty good zoo it reminds me more of a park with
animals in it but very kid friendly and the museum next to it is
also very good very hands on make sure to ask for your military
discount ..There are small towns all around the area that you can
visit with things to do and if you want that BIG city feel Dallas is
about 3 hours south
School System? The elementary schools here
fairly decent however head lice is horrible here, Jr high here is
6th-8th and they are good but I think a little to strict when it
comes to education over "dress codes" I have had my daughter miss
her first three classes because her nails were painted black and not
really sure on the high schools but I have heard they are pretty
good as well
Any colleges in area?Cameron
Jobs? (on post and off) On post I know they
hire new ppl every 3-5 months off post pay here isn't as good as a
bigger city but the major chains hire alot IE Walmart etc
Favorite aspect of this base/surrounding city?
It has a family feel to the community
Least favorite aspect? Other than shopping and
casino not alot to do here in the cold and after 10 the only things
open are Walmart,casino's and bars
Local websites? (base, chamber, newspaper,
schools, etc.)
www.lawtonps.org,
www.lawton-constitution.com
Any other tips? It was hard to get used to no
sidewalks here, no basements and unless you shop on post here there
is tax on groceries which is at 8.5%. In the winter make sure you
have atleast a two week supply of food because if the people here
think there is going to be a storm of some kind they wipe the
markets out and the hardware stores here don't normally carry alot
of "winter items" so they run out fast too and it's cheaper here to
buy bread from the bread store the best one is on Lee Blvd
