SCHOFIELD
BARRACKS
Your
Name (if you would like it to appear):
Stephanie
Frommeyer
Base
Name:
Schofield
Barracks
Base
Location:
Hawaii
How
long have you been here? (give years please, ex. 2003-present) 1996-2000
What
is housing like? On-post? (waiting list, conditions, etc.) Off-post? Any
areas to stay away from? Average price to rent or buy?
They
were building new housing when I left there, we stayed in the real old
houses and they were looking at tearing them down after we left, but I
don't know if they did. Waiting list is pretty short, we waited about
2-3 wks. Schofield borders Wahiawa, which is a little town outside of
post, stay away from living there, a lot of crime and they don't like
the military all that much, even though we give them almost all their
business. Average price to rent a one bedroom or studio apartment is
about $1200. They pay you more for being there, but that is still a
pretty penny. It is worth it to live on base there.
Rate
the PX & Commissary.
PX--B,
Commissary--A, it was built in 1997 and it is huge!
Activities
on base?
There
is much more to do off base, like surfing, snorkeling, scuba diving,
boating, hiking, fishing, and biking.
Active
Spouses Club?
I
really don't know about that.
Things
to do in area?
There
is a great flea market at the stadium, a big mall not to far away, a
bunch of historical sites, like the USS Arizona and Pearl Harbor, of
course, the beach, and an outdoor market place in Waikiki.
School
System?
On
base, not bad. My daughter was only in K when we left there, I don't
know much about the schools off post, all my friends kids were young.
Any
colleges in area?
Hawaii
Pacific College, CTC on post and University of Hawaii
Jobs?
(on post and off)
Jobs
are kinda scarce. The locals had more jobs on base when we were there,
than the wives.
Favorite
aspect of this base/surrounding city?
Everyone
was so friendly on post, it was like we all understood what everyone was
going through, being so far away from home and all.
Least
favorite aspect?
Wahiawa
was a dump, at least a few years ago it was.
Local
websites? (base, chamber, newspaper, schools, etc.)
Any
other tips?
Wear
sunblock and take advantage of the warm sunny weather. We grilled out
for Christmas and other traditionally cold holidays. Make lots of
friends, they will truly be your second family. I still talk to a lot of
friends we met while stationed there. Have fun!!
