FT RILEY

Your Name (if you would like it to appear): Katie

Base Name: Ft. Riley

Base Location: Kansas

How long have you been here? (give years please, ex. 2003-present)
January 2008-Present
What is housing like? On-post? (waiting list, conditions, etc.) Off-post? Any areas to stay away from? Average price to rent or buy? We're currently waiting for on post housing. The wait list as of now is about 5-7 months for a 2 bdrm for E-1 to E-3. Higher ranking soldiers wait are anywhere from 4-10 months. The house we are renting off post is pretty nice. Junction City is a small town, but a bigger college town, Manhattan is only 20 minutes away. From Northern VA the rental prices are pretty good. Our 2 bdrm house w/ garage is $690 plus utilities.

Rate the PX & Commissary. The PX is pretty fair. Normal prices. The commissary is amazing. The prices are great. Between that and Walmart we save a bunch.

Activities on base? Organizations are always having activities. There is an Arts and Crafts center. The movie theater has movies every weekend. The bowling alley is pretty popular.

Active Spouses Club? The Enlisted Spouse Club is very active. Just last week they had one of their annual dances.

Things to do in area? If you want to do anything big you have to travel outside town. Junction City has a bowling alley, some restaurants, a nice movie rental place and a movie theater. Manhattan has a bowling alley, lots of restaurants, movie theater and a mall.

School System? I wouldn't know. I don't have kids.

Any colleges in area? Kansas State University is in Manhattan

Jobs? (on post and off) From what I've seen there are jobs off post. Some require degrees others don't. Not as many as a city would have but they are available if you look.

Favorite aspect of this base/surrounding city? Everyone is extremely friendly and helpful out here. It's easy to get to almost anywhere in Junction City within only minutes of a bigger city.

Least favorite aspect? The weather and parts of the neighborhoods. Depending on where you are it looks if you're on the wrong side of the tracks.

Local websites? (base, chamber, newspaper, schools, etc.)

Any other tips? If you need to run errands make a circle. If you need to go on base and then other places off base go to the farthest place and make your way back. Everything is here it's just very far apart from one another so gas is hard to keep.
