POLK
Your Name (if you would like it to appear):
R.M.
Base Name: Fort Polk.
Base Location:
Leesville, LA.
How long have you been here? (give years please,
ex. 2003-present)
Dec.2005-Oct.2007
What is housing like? On-post? (waiting list,
conditions, etc.) Off-post? Any areas to stay away from? Average price
to rent or buy?
South
Fort isn't as nice as North fort but it's closer to the main part of
post. North fort has nice town houses. The waiting list is short,
especially for 2 bedrooms.
Rate the PX & Commissary.
They're both very small compared to other post.
Activities on base?
Lost of outdoors things. Range, softball, fishing,
etc.
Active Spouses Club?
They have the normal NCO wives club thing.
Things to do in area?
In town (Leesville) there is only a wal mart and a
few restaurants and boutiques that you've never heard of. But Alexandria
has a mall and target and things and is about 45 minutes north east from
there and Lake Charles which is bigger than Alex. is about an hour south
of there which has a mall, target and pretty much everything else. Good
food.
School System?
On post there are 2 elem. schools and off post the
closest school is Pickering which is K-6th and then 7th-12th.
Any colleges in area?
LSU is 3 1/2 hours away in Baton Rough and right
off post is NSU at Fort Polk, then you have your education center
colleges. McNeese State Univ. is in Lake Charles an hour away. Lamar
Saulter campus (tech college) is about 15 minutes away toward Deridder.
Jobs? (on post and off)
Jobs are limited, it's usually aafes or wal mart,
when I was there I worked for a civilian contractor that worked with the
JRTC. Cubic, it's located on post in north fort, pay is good but you
don't have a steady work schedule and it's long hours.
Favorite aspect of this base/surrounding city?
I'm from Lake Charles so my opinion is a bit bias,
I loved being close to home and Lake Charles is a nice area. It's quiet
and it's so green.
Least favorite aspect?
There isn't much to do on the actual base.
Any other tips?
Make
lots of friends, it makes it so much better. Travel, there is so much to
see in the south!
