PRESIDIO OF MONTEREY

Your Name (if you would like it to appear):

Mia Laughlin

Base Name: FNMOC (the navy weather station where I station at) ,Navel Post Graduate School , DLI

Base Location: Monterey, CA

How long have you been here? (give years please, ex. 2003-present)

I have been here since May of 2003 I will be leaving here July of 2007. I am getting out of the Navy and my Husband joined the army and is currently going to school now at Fort Meade

What is housing like? On-post? (waiting list, conditions, etc.) Off-post? Any areas to stay away from? Average price to rent or buy? Well that depend on your rank and if you enlisted or officer if you’re an officers wife you have it made there housing is really nice if your enlisted well you experience can very if you’re a spouse of a student you will live in the oldest housing at first glances it is nice giving that It is your first home as it was mine hard wood floors dishwasher garbage deposal witch you  will learn is an pain is the @$$ it gets clogged very easily (but I’m just venting) .some people have nice yard some get struck with dirt and ice plant( no you can not mow it and it dose not die trust me we have all tried ) but they now have people that mow it yes even in the rain but if you are luck to get a fenced in yard you have to mow that and if you would like you can rent a chain fence you can have animals your supposed to tell housing but most don’t  then you get to keep your pet fee . I have lots of spiders in my house but I just kill them and ants random ants you going to your kitchen and there is 3 ant you kill them you come back ten minuets later you have 20 you kill them come back you have 8 then they disappear for a few days or a month and there back (can’t explain it, just trust me) kitchen is galley style with not much counter space. If you don’t have a washer and dryer you can rent one or try to find one in the classified ads if you luck to call fast enough. Also try the Salvation Army you can find them on there sometimes (it’s on Fremont Street, one of the mine roads). When I went to get a house they gave me a master Key and told me to pick one and come back with the house Number and street (but that was 4 years ago so I’m sure it has changed) I can’t say any are to stay away from but most people live on Fort Ord if you’re an officer then La Massa village that is the navy housing .but it doesn’t matter. It is really expensive here and buying a home is ridiculous unless you like that million dollar shack. I guess don’t live in Salinas it‘s not far just a little inconvenient .so that is my opinion but I have only lived in enlisted E-4 below housing

Rate the PX & Commissary. The commissary is ok ,it’s not the worst but not the best  get all of your caned food boxed foods hell most every thing .if you can afford it  get a Costco card and get your meats from there and most produce too. I find that the milk from the commissary goes bad faster (again just my opinion) on to the PX well to tell you the truth I forget about the PX  it is small but to my surprise when I do remember  about it, it dose have most odds and ends there and a very good alcohol selection other then Costco I know this was not on the list but get your gas on Fort Ord it may not seem like it some times but it is cheaper I mean you can pay $3.33 on base or $3.49 off post you decide

Activities on base?  Ummmm well they do have stuff for kids during all of the holidays they have some sort of event. Kids can go to the porter youth center and play all sports usually costs about $45 per sport. Other then football for that as my son did he played for the Monterey jets total cost about $300 bucks $175 on registration then on uniform coasts the rest

Active Spouses Club? Well seeing as I have been a army wife for a few months and have been the active duty member I really didn’t pay much attention to this aspect but as my roll has now switched I will be more observant for next time.

Things to do in area? Well lots to do at first you have cannery row, the assume and expensive Monterey bay aquarium (home of the two famous great with sharks) the really short fisherman’s pier  you can drive highway 1 you have Santa cruse and San Jose most of the museums are there san Francisco is about hour and a half away Gilroy home of the world famous garlic festival (witch in my opinion was ok ) and bafontey gardens never went there and the outlet mall .and if you want all the restraints and a bigger mall you have Salinas home of the US deadly spinach incident . Most people won’t be here as long as I have been so I now finding my self board.

School System?  Well if you live on Fort Ord and have K-5 your child will go to Marshall Elementary School next to the youth center which has morning afternoon and summer openings. Junior high is Fitch middle school and high school is seaside high .I only dealt with Marshal elementary school for a while but since my child has ADHD and is bi-polar then did not want to deal with him and just suspended him all the time so my chief helped me out and I did get him in to an appropriate school he now goes to JC Crompton  that is in marina  and they pick him up in front of our house so I don’t have to drive him to school so if you have a child with special need s like mine did this might be the school for you. They have a modified school year here they start in August get out for two weeks in the beginning of October have  Christmas brake  spring break and get out with in the first two weeks of June

Any colleges in area? Monterey Peninsula College (community) and CSUMB (4 year university)

Jobs? (on post and off) I really don’t know I am active duty. So I didn’t have to worry about this and my husband had a job before I met him. Try the pebble beach company they do have lots of golf courses here.

Favorite aspect of this base/surrounding city? Ummm it’s quite if you like that sort of thing

Least favorite aspect? It’s quit and you have to drive to get to things

Local websites? (base, chamber, newspaper, schools, etc.)
