FORT
LEONARD WOOD
Base Name: Fort Leonard Wood
Base Location: Missouri
How long have you been here? August 2007 - present
What is housing like? On-post? The housing here isn't bad. There is
no waiting list. You show up and get a house on the same day you
arrived. However, the private contractor that runs house (American
Eagle) is not easy to work with. There are rumors flying around
that they are going to lose their contract. The old housing here is
not bad. I have seen a lot worse. However, they are slowly
demolishing the old housing and replacing with new. There is a
chance you will have to move again if you get old housing. We got
here in August 2007 and had to move again in December 2007 to the
new housing. The new housing looks really nice but there are issues
because it is being thrown up quickly. Be prepared to call
maintenance a lot in the new housing.
Rate the PX & Commissary. The PX about a 6 and the commissary is
about a 2. The meat selection at the commissary is poor and I often
find food already expired sitting on the shelves. The commissary's
case lot sale is very chaotic, poorly organized, and takes hours to
get into. The PX isn't bad here. They have a good food court.
Activities on base? There isn't a whole lot. The
sportman's center has canoe float trips on the weekends. The Piney
River goes through base and is nice for fishing. There is also a 1
theater movie theater and a bowling alley. The gym is always about 100
degrees inside and isn't large enough to handle the crowd it gets in the
evenings.
Active Spouses Club? Supposedly there is one but I
don't know anything about it.
Things to do in area? Wal-Mart, drive 1 1/2 hours
to Springfield where there is Bass Pro's Outdoor World. Branson is
about 2 hours and is a fun weekend trip. St. Louis is about 2 hours.
There are a couple of good lakes nearby. Lake of the Ozarks is about an
hour away but is really crowded on the summer weekends. Pomme de Terre
Lake (about 2 hours away) is less crowded on the summer weekends and has
great fishing too!
School System? Really good schools. I have
subbed here and have been very impressed by the schools.
Any colleges in area? Central Texas College,
Drury University, Missouri S&T (formerly UMR), etc. Plenty of college
options around.
Jobs? Jobs are in very short supply around here.
The government positions here on post are only being filled currently by
veterans or those already in government. MWR jobs mostly don't pay
much. I have a Master's degree and have never had a problem finding a
job before until we moved here. It took me six months to get one job
interview for anything that paid decent.
Favorite aspect of this base/surrounding city?
Outdoor activities
Least favorite aspect? Not a whole lot to do.
