What
is housing like? On-post? (waiting list, conditions, etc.) Off-post?
Any
areas to stay away from? Average price to rent or buy?
Housing
on post is available upon arrival. However, it is in poor and old
condition. Newly constructed housing is
available only to enlisted families who
have been living in old housing the longest. Thus, many families rent
off post. The rents vary. A 3 bedroom
rental average price is $ 750-1000. We bought
a house and decided to rent it out after our departure. The real
estate
market is booming. St. Robert and Waynesville do not have any bad
neighborhoods.
Rate
the PX & Commissary.
On
a scale from 1-10 I would rate the PX with a 7 and the Commissary with a
10. I was impressed with the variety of
foods, the freshness, and convenient hours.
The Commissary is open Monday-Sunday and on weekdays as early as 7am.
Activities
on base?
Plenty!
The PATRIOT and GUIDON are good information sources. The newspapers
are free and come out on Thursdays. They
are available at the Commissary and local
businesses. Furthermore, the post has one indoor pool, three outdoor
pools,
a bowling alley, movie theatre, golf course, hiking trails, beautiful
parks etc.

Things
to do in area?
We
enjoyed the outdoors. There are plenty of hiking and biking trails.
Additionally, we watched almost every
play performed by the Waynesville Drama
Group. The theatre is very small, however, offers A LOT OF TALENT and
provides
the spectator with great entertainment. The local towns celebrate
numerous festivals throughout the year.
School
System?
I
substituted for a little while. The schools on and off post are pretty
much on the same level. They operate
under one umbrella, the Waynesville RVI school system.
Any
colleges in area?
Fort
Leonard Wood offers plenty of possibilities. Webster, Lincoln, Maryland,
Central Texas, UMR...just to name a few. Both, BA and MA degrees are
available.
Jobs?
(on post and off)
Most
of the spouses are stay at home moms. Nevertheless, despite its small
size, the job market is not as bad as
advertised. I would recommend www.militaryspousejobsearch.com
and the local papers as a reference. I worked
for a government contractor on post.
Favorite
aspect of this base/surrounding city?
Springfield
is just one hour away and Osage Beach only 40 minutes. Both cities
offer great shopping opportunities. Osage Beach has an OUTLET MALL and
Springfield offers delicious restaurants.
Least
favorite aspect?
Rural
flair. You have to be pro-active, look out for things to do, and focus
your attention more on nature rather than
city life. It worked out well for us.
Now that we don't have it anymore, we miss it quite a bit.
