How long have you been here? (give years please, ex. 2003-present) 7/2004-present
What is housing like? On-post? (waiting list, conditions, etc.) Off-post? Any areas to stay away from? Average price to rent or buy? I live off post but they do have some nice post housing. Some of it is new and beautiful. I would steer clear of Ft. Hood St and downtown Killeen. We pay $680 to buy our house but houses in our neighborhood rent for >$800.I would guess the average renting price would be $550-$600 for less than 1000sqft. Some people chose to live closer to Austin in Georgetown but the rent is more there.
Rate the PX & Commissary. Clear Creek Commissary isn't that clean but it's closer than Warrior Way. One PX has clothing and toys and the other one has furniture and electronics. I would prefer a little of everything at both locations.
Activities on base? www.hoodmwr.com They have a list of tons of things to do.
Active Spouses Club? I'm pretty sure...I'm not active it in though.
Things to do in area? Parks, arts and crafts shows, ceramic shop in Copperas Cove, Belton Lake Outdoor Recreations (swimming, skiing, etc.), bowling, movies, horseback riding, caverns close to Austin, Waco has museums of Texas history and the Texas Rangers (no not the baseball team.) If you are into baseball you have the Texas Rangers about 2.5 hours north and the Houston Astros about 3.5-4 hours east.
School System? Not sure...I've heard good things about Copperas Cove. Daycare averages about $75/week for a 1 year old fulltime.
Any colleges in area? Central Texas College and Tarleton State
Jobs? (on post and off) I stay at home. I've looked for jobs but didn't have much success in finding any to pay over $7/hr. Although my friend with a degree got a job paying $11/hour. There is a local hospital for jobs and some people choose to drive to Temple for a job.
Favorite aspect of this base/surrounding city? I would say being centrally located...only about an hour from Austin, 2 hours or so from San Antonio, 2.5 hours from Dallas/Ft. Worth, and 3-4 hours from Houston.
Least favorite aspect? No big shops here. Also the traffic is horrible starting about 4 or so in the afternoons.

Any other tips? It gets hot here so pets who are made for colder weather need to stay indoors. It doesn't get too cold here during the winter. I personally think it's wonderful here. I love seeing the hills when I step out of my front door. |
