FT GORDON

Your Name (if you would like it to appear):

Tera

Base Name:

Fort Gordon

Base Location:

Georgia

How long have you been here? (give years please, ex. 2003-present)

Jan 2005-June 2005

What is housing like? On-post? (waiting list, conditions, etc.) Off-post? Any areas to stay away from? Average price to rent or buy?

There's no on base housing unless you are stationed there, but it looked nice. There are several places off-post though. Everything around the Augusta area is pretty nice and rent on apartments is from $450-600 a month and they all have the military clause in the lease.

Rate the PX & Commissary.

They are both pretty good, they always have what you need or can tell you where to find it.

Activities on base?

There's a nice lake, a bowling alley, a dinner theater, and sometimes they hold activities at the Gordon Lake Club.

Active Spouses Club?

I don't think are any here, cause it's mostly a training post.

Things to do in area?

There is a roller skating rink, a mall, several movie theaters, and the best thing is the Downtown Augusta Riverwalk. You can see across the Savannah River over into South Carolina and it has historical markers and names of fallen soldiers from past wars carved into bricks. I definitely recommend going, it's free and you can spend the whole day just walking around or bring a picnic.

School System?

There is an Elementary school on base, and as far as of post I heard they are really nice but don't know for sure. The ones we saw were nice and most are within walking distance for the kids to go home.

Any colleges in area?

There is a community college close to downtown, but at the moment the name escapes me.

Jobs? (on post and off)

They are always looking for people on base for various things, such as the PX, Commissary, the bingo hall, and such. There is a mall that's almost always hiring, Kroger, Target, Chick-fil-A, and many others.

Favorite aspect of this base/surrounding city?

Everything is really simple to find on base, it's all close to together. I loved how it only took like 15 mins to get anywhere in Augusta.

Least favorite aspect?

Didn't get to spend enough time there.

Local websites? (base, chamber, newspaper, schools, etc.)

The base website is kinda helpful, but it's easier to just look for things yourself or ask someone at the gate.

Any other tips?

Make sure that if you don't have the decals on your car that you have your driver's license, insurance info, and vehicle registration. Because it is a very secure base and they will search your vehicle if you don't have post decals. If you need any more info feel free to ask.
