FT
DRUM
Base Name: Fort Drum
Base Location: Ft, Drum, New York
How long have you been here? (give years please,
ex. 2003-present)
just over a year
What is housing like? On-post? (waiting list,
conditions, etc.) Off-post? Any areas to stay away from? Average price
to rent or buy?
The
housing on-post is GREAT, especially the new ones! We only
waited for 1 1/2 months. I don't know too much about off-post
rentals, though I do know they are hard to come by. I would stay
away from Govenour and Philadelphia housing since they are far and
weather around here can be bad.
Rate the PX & Commissary. Love the
commissary, though PX doesn't have much selection
Activities on base? LOTS, a couple of the new
community centers are open which over fitness centers that overlook a
playroom for your kids, so all us moms can work out without having to
get a babysitter, just look out the window to playroom. The
community centers offer a lot of activities. Lots of religious classes
as well.
Active Spouses Club? I haven't checked out too
many spouse clubs, but we have your usual ones.
Things to do in area? Dry Hill (off-post) for
skiing, tubing, snowboarding. Remington Park on post is great,
though the pond is a little gross, the kids don't seem to mind, but I
cringe! There are plenty of sports and things like that offered
through youth services on post, as well as an indoor playground, and
also the Y in Watertown.
School System?
School system is good, though some housing
communities like mine, bus them out to Antwerp which is a good 25 min
car ride.
Any colleges in area?
JCC and BOCES
Jobs? (on post and off)
babysitting for those SAH mom's of deployed
soldiers, not sure what else
Favorite aspect of this base/surrounding city?
it is close to lots of major cities
Least favorite aspect?
THE DREADED WINTER WEATHER. we are from
the north.
Local websites? (base, chamber, newspaper,
schools, etc.)
Any other tips?
take up winter activities and get involved!!!
