FORT CAMPBELL

Your Name (if you would like it to appear): KimberlyB

Base Name: Ft. Campbell

Base Location: Kentucky

How long have you been here? (give years please, ex. 2003-present) 2006-present

What is housing like? On-post? (waiting list, conditions, etc.) Off-post? Any areas to stay away from? Average price to rent or buy? There is a considerable waiting list to live on post. The housing is ok, and they are re-building certain housing areas. My husband and I opted to live off post, he didn't want to feel like "he was always at work." We were very unfamiliar with the area, and chose a townhouse in Oak Grove, KY. Oak Grove is very close to one of the main gates, so we thought we got lucky. I will tell you its more expensive to live in Oak Grove than in Clarksville. Our rent for our townhouse was 475.00 a month for a 2bed/1 1/2 bath. But are utilities are so much higher! Again we thought we were lucky, until we lived there for awhile. The area we were at was horrible and our landlords even worse. My husband worried about my safety while he was gone so when he deployed i moved to Clarksville, TN and the rent price for a 3bed/2bath house is 675.00. I feel very safe in the area that I'm at and its super quiet. I made the mistake of "exploring" Clarksville and I will NEVER do that again. There are certain parts you just don't want to go at night...

Rate the PX & Commissary. (To me) We have a very huge PX and  everyone is very nice there. I've only braved the commissary 4 times since I've been here, but the prices are very very low.

Activities on base? Yes! Horseback riding, indoor and outdoor pools, a fitness gym (also you can get a MWR discount card while your spouse is deployed, and you get a free gym membership with free childcare while you workout!)

There is Gear to Go, a place where you can rent recreational stuff, i.e boats and r.v's. There is also several fishing spots on post, paintball course/field and an archery range. A very interesting and wonderful Museum, if you are into that kinda thing.

Active Spouses Club? Yes, though I'm not apart of any.

Things to do in area? Lake Barkley and Kentucky Lake is about 1 hour away. You can camp, fish, swim etc... Nashville is also about an hour away. Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge is about 3 1/2 hours away and wonderful to visit on a free weekend. Gatlinburg is very beautiful with lots of cabins to rent and things to do!

School System? I don't have any children, however all my friends do. They have said that the on post schools are good, but tougher than civilian schools. I haven't really heard anything about off post schools.

Any colleges in area? Austin Peay

Jobs? (on post and off) I'm not working at the moment, so I'm not sure!

Favorite aspect of this base/surrounding city? Living so close to Gatlinburg and Nashville!

Least favorite aspect? Just the really bad parts of Clarksville and the traffic! Usually between 11 and noon and 4 to 5pm traffic is horrible in Clarksville. Around 4-6am traffic is crazy if you are going on post!

Local websites? (base, chamber, newspaper, schools, etc.) Ft. Campbell website: http://www.campbell.army.mil

Any other tips? Before you choose to live off post, research the area and your future landlords if you rent! Dont be afraid to ask your rental agency about the area and cost of living! Sadly there are people out there who will take advantage of miltary familes. If you choose to live in Oak Grove, be careful of the area, as some are blacklisted for military familes. There are also several blacklisted areas in Clarksville.
