FORT CAMPBELL

Your Name:

Garcia

Base Name:

Fort Campbell

Base Location:

Kentucky

How long have you been here?

2003 - present

What is housing like? On-post?

I haven't lived on post but the majority of my friends say that the

waiting list is long. They're in the process of building some beautiful new homes to accommodate more people though. The older housing isn't bad. Some of it is kind of cramped but there are a variety of housing tracks. Some are more spacious than others, it just depends on rank.

Off-post?

Off post you'll find regular civilian housing. We bought a 4 bedroom, 2 bathroom that was under $100k and is very spacious. Newer homes in town tend to be around the same price range but square footage is extremely low. There are a lot of rentals

and tons of apartments here.

Any areas to stay away from?

Not really. All though down town Clarksville (the city right outside of Fort Campbell) can be a little rough around the edges.

Average price to rent or buy?

We rented a 3 bedroom house, 1 and 1/2 bath for $600 a month. A lot of the rentals were going for that amount. Buying: The newer

homes that are more on the large side (1700 square feet and up) are running about $125 - $150k. There are plenty of homes around here built in the 60's and 70's that have the square footage but not the price tag. They usually run between $65 - $110k.

Rate the PX & Commissary.

I love the PX. It's large and they're still building on to it. The Commissary is great too. It's just your normal little grocery store.

Activities on base?

Plenty! There are all kinds of things for your kids to do. They have sports, after school activities and around the holidays they hold

huge kids events. Neighborhoods also have little carnivals once in a while. For adults there are restaurants, a bowling alley, a movie theatre, gyms and pools.

Active Spouses Club?

I don't have enough info to say.

Things to do in area?

A lot of people enjoy going to the lake for the day, there's plenty of camping, there's a little Amish community close by, we have a

nice movie theatre, a mall, a large river by the fairgrounds and a cool little park for kids. There's also a skate park on Peacher's Mill for the older kids. Then there's always touristy things like

visiting old plantations and Civil War related sites.

School System?

On post - it's great. The elementary schools are nice and they're all required to wear a uniform. I've heard that the high school isn't quite as good but it certainly isn't bad either. Off post - It's large and seems to be your normal public school system. Test scores for the system tend to be on the higher end.

Any colleges in area? Yes. There are business schools, technology schools, trade schools, there's a state university here plus a community college.

Jobs? (on post and off)

I'm not really sure. I've heard it's rough finding a job.

Favorite aspect of this base/surrounding city?

It's a large city with a small town feel but with all the conveniences of a large city.

Least favorite aspect?

None really.
