What is housing like? On-post? (waiting list, conditions, etc.) Off-post?

Any areas to stay away from? Average price to rent or buy? Short waiting list on base, older houses not great ( multiples) but newer houses on slits and townhouses very nice, but no fenced in yards on base. Off post very nice houses around the Tampa Bay area, but the nicer areas are far from base, at least 25 mins away. We lived in North Tampa for a year, Brandon for 2 years and now we live on base for the last 10 months. Brandon, Riverview, Valrico really nice areas to live. Be careful in South Tampa ( where base is) not all the areas in South Tampa are safe. It is safe on base though.

Rate the PX & Commissary. Commissary ok, prices are cheaper than anywhere else in the area. But the baggers are difficult to handle sometimes. Not a great selection at the BX ( same as PX), you might as well go to walmart 20 mins away or Target 5 mins away.

Activities on base? Base pool in the summer, bowling alley, golf course, Beach, Restaurants, youth center, sports for the kids, sports for adults, really nice gym.

Active Spouses Club? I don't know.

Things to do in area? So much to do!!! Tampa has everything- a great zoo, aquarium, busch gardens, adventure Island waterPark, Children Mus in Tampa and St Pete, several beaches, harbor, shopping malls, watersports, boat tours, Tampa Bay Bucs, arena football, baseball, yankee spring training field, Phil spring training, so much!! Orlando only one hour away from base with Disney World, Universal and SeaWorld.

School System? My kids are too young for school.

Any colleges in area? Yes. USF and community colleges.

Jobs? (on post and off) Not much on base, some GS. Tons off base.

Favorite aspect of this base/surrounding city? I have an ocean view from my back porch. I also enjoy going to Disney World.

Least favorite aspect? The traffic and the heat in the summertime.
