Basic Training
1. Your name: Heidi
2. Where did your soldier attend basic training? Fort Sill, Oklahoma 3. When did he attend basic training? November 2007- February 2008 4. How often did you hear from him? I would be able to talk to my DH on the phone on Sundays, but sometimes they weren't able to. The most I ever got to talk to him was for 10 minutes. I usually got a letter from him once a week. 5. How long was it before you heard from him the first time? I heard from him when he was in reception so within the first week. But after he got into Basic, he didn't get to call for 2 weeks. 6. How long did it take to receive a mailing address for him? It took me 2 weeks to get an address from him. 7. Were there any restrictions on what you could send him? Yes, I couldn't send him any food. I did send him a couple of care packages that had a bunch of hygiene stuff in it and he got to keep it all. 8. Were you sent information about family day and graduation? I was sent a packet of information about Family day and Graduation which included an schedule, maps, a car pass, and a list of local hotels. 9. Did he have a family day? If so, please describe. He did have a family day. It started as a demonstration of them showing us some things they did during basic. Then we had to go back to the barracks and wait until they were released for the Lunch. The lunch was a required event and we paid $11 per adult for the food and watched the video of the soldiers during basic. Then he was able to go off base until 2100. 10. Please describe the graduation ceremony. The Graduation ceremony was great. They introduced all the drill sergeants, passed out excellence awards, and the soldiers getting their diplomas. He was then released to go off base until 2100. 11. Is there a website for his basic training unit? Is there a place to see pictures of his training online? His unit didn't have a website and there were no pictures available online. 12. Any other tips or information? Write your solider as often as you can, it is what keeps them going. Also when you go to see him/her, be ready to wait until they are ready to release them, they can take a long time!!! **************************************** We are currently seeking writers to contribute about their soldier's experience during basic training. Since training, contact and the overall atmosphere can vary greatly from one basic training post to the next, I thought this would be helpful. If you would like to contribute your experience to help other Army family members, please email me this completed questionnaire. Thank you for your help!
