Basic Training Guides - Ft Sill

1. Your name (as you would like it to appear on the website): 15YWifeMel

2. Where did your soldier attend basic training? Ft. Sill, Oklahoma

3. When did he attend basic training? March 13, 2007 - June 1, 2007

4. How often did you hear from him? (Phone and letters) He called me every day while in Reception (he was in reception for a week and a half). When he actually started BCT, he called me on Sunday's.

5. How long was it before you heard from him the first time? He called me the day after he arrived. Reception was more "lax" so as long as he had a phone card, he was able to call every day.

6. How long did it take to receive a mailing address for him? About 2 weeks.

7. Were there any restrictions on what you could send him? No food, medicine (including cough/vitamin C drops), inappropriate photos or electronics.

8. Were you sent information about family day and graduation? Yes

9. Did he have a family day? If so, please describe. Family Day was the day before graduation. We were instructed to be at the barracks at 9am. They had a presentation of what the soldiers do during BCT and then they were released to visit with their families and show us around their barracks. After that, they had a luncheon for us, which was really nice and then the soldiers were released until 10pm to spend with us.

10. Please describe the graduation ceremony. The graduation was in the morning. I suggest you get there early and stand in line to get in because the theater gets packed quickly and you want to get a good seat. They start out showing video and slide shows of the solders throughout BCT and then they go on to talk about the Drill Sergeant's. After that, they proceeded to introduce the graduates one by one and give them their "diplomas" (actually just a rolled up piece of paper). After closing remarks, the soldiers are exited and stand in formation outside for photos then put on buses to go back to the barracks where we met them to pick up our soldiers. They were then released again until 10pm.

11. Is there a website for his basic training unit? Is there a place to see pictures of his training online? http://sill-www.army.mil/434/Grad%20Main_info.htm

12. Any other tips or information? I received a few packets in the mail. One consisted of the DEERS and Tricare paperwork and the other was about graduation. In one of the packets, there was information about signing up to receive weekly emails from the DS' with photos and updates on the soldiers. I would highly suggest signing up. These emails were so neat and I actually saw my husband in some of the photos.

We are currently seeking writers to contribute about their soldier's experience during basic training. Since training, contact and the overall atmosphere can vary greatly from one basic training post to the next, I thought this would be helpful. If you would like to contribute your experience to help other Army family members, please email me this completed questionnaire. Thank you for your help!
