Basic Training Guides - Ft Knox

1. Your name (as you would like it to appear on the website):

Shelly Dawn

2. Where did your soldier attend basic training?

Fort Knox

3. When did he attend basic training?

January 16th thru April 3rd  2008

4. How often did you hear from him? (Phone and letters)

I got an average of 3 letters a week but only 4 phone calls the WHOLE time.

5. How long was it before you heard from him the first time?

I got letters while he was in reception but no phone calls.

The first phone call was well into the first phase and it was only for literally 1 min! Enough for him to tell me he loved me and goodbye.

6. How long did it take to receive a mailing address for him?

about 9 days after he left

7. Were there any restrictions on what you could send him?

Could not send anything but letters and stationary.

8. Were you sent information about family day and graduation?

Yes but it was about 3 weeks before Graduation. And all it contained was a map of the base and a letter saying what his CO's name was and how to get I contact with the CO.  I would advice you to get the info from your soldier there!

9. Did he have a family day? If so, please describe.

He had Family day and they allowed them an off post pass for family day. Saying that though the Drill SGT.'s told them that they were the first in training history at Ft. Knox to get off post passes at all. They were "trying it out" to see if it would work out. He was allowed a 10 mile radius of the base. Which allowed you plenty of places to go and was gone from 9:30 till 8:00pm he had to sign back in at 8.

10. Please describe the graduation ceremony.

I cant really describe it other than it is emotional and very informative of what they had to go through. All though his was changed the last min. due to a rainstorm they moved it inside and told us they were shortening it up since they couldn't go outside.

11. Is there a website for his basic training unit? Is there a place to see pictures of his training online?

Not one to speak of it hasn't been updated in 4 years so I never went back to the website. You can go to fort Knox's main website and it is a link off of it.

No pics of training online. Although they do give you a chance to buy a pic CD and a DVD of the training.

12. Any other tips or information?

Show up early for familyday I left early to find the place and they allowed him to leave an hour early. Do not expect phone calls most of the Drill Sgt.'s there think phone calls are a distraction and do not allow many.

We are currently seeking writers to contribute about their soldier's experience during basic training. Since training, contact and the overall atmosphere can vary greatly from one basic training post to the next, I thought this would be helpful. If you would like to contribute your experience to help other Army family members, please email me this completed questionnaire. Thank you for your help!
