Basic Training
1. Your name (as you would like it to appear on the website): Angela Gaffney 2. Where did your soldier attend basic training? Fort Jackson SC 3. When did he attend basic training? Jan through Apr 4. How often did you hear from him? (Phone and letters) No letters for a couple of weeks, phone very rarely, because his mates kept getting into trouble. 5. How long was it before you heard from him the first time? He was allowed to call the first day there to check in. 6. How long did it take to receive a mailing address for him? It took forever to get the first letter, maybe 2 weeks. 7. Were there any restrictions on what you could send him? Yes, no food of any kind, no candy, not too many letters in one day from the same person. 8. Were you sent information about family day and graduation? Yes, pretty good while before the day, gave us plenty of time to prepare 9. Did he have a family day? If so, please describe. Very crowded and he was allowed to spend the whole day with us after it and then when brought him back at 8 pm 10. Please describe the graduation ceremony. There were too many people, they all marched around the field in their uniforms and recited some things... there was no proper ceremony where names were called and diplomas given. It was one big general ceremony for everyone there. 11. Is there a website for his basic training unit? Is there a place to see pictures of his training online? I don't know... there was a lot of things to buy there though and we were already broke from the trip so I did not to get anything but pics. 12. Any other
tips or information? Don't dress nicely for the graduation
because it is outside on a very rocky terrain and you sit on
bleachers so it's hard to walk in heels and if it is raining
take something to dry the bleachers with... we did get to
take him to his AIT and we got to spend the whole weekend
with him after checking him out at Fort Jackson and checking
him in the next day at Gordon. So be prepared to spend like
3 nights in a hotel room if you want to take your soldier to
AIT it was expensive but well worth it! And get Army lodging
if you can as it is very nice... much nicer than a regular
hotel and cheaper
**************************************** We are currently seeking writers to contribute about their soldier's experience during basic training. Since training, contact and the overall atmosphere can vary greatly from one basic training post to the next, I thought this would be helpful. If you would like to contribute your experience to help other Army family members, please email me this completed questionnaire. Thank you for your help!
