Basic Training
1. Your name (as you would like it to
appear on the website): Nikki 2. Where did your
soldier attend basic training? Fort Jackson 3. When did he attend
basic training? Sept 20-Nov 30th 07, the first week was
reception 4. How often did you
hear from him? (Phone and letters) i got a letter everyday,
sometimes 2 or 3. I only talked to him twice. His platoon was
always in trouble for something so they did not get calls. 5. How long was it
before you heard from him the first time? By mail, a week and a
half. By phone 3 weeks 6. How long did it
take to receive a mailing address for him? i called after he was
there 7 days and asked. 7. Were there any
restrictions on what you could send him? Only 3 pictures, no
food. He discouraged packages because he had to do more pushups.
He was given the chance every week to buy what he needed. I set
lots of cards :) 8. Were you sent
information about family day and graduation? Yes, I got it after
about 2 weeks 9. Did he have a
family day? If so, please describe. We had a family briefing and
watched a very nice video of the soldiers. We were all crying
of course. They then let us know what area which soldiers would
be. They released us and we were to go find our soldier. It took
a while but we found each other. They have a place on post where
you can take pics not to mention a bowling alley. however, DH
and I went to the park and he showed me where he had been
training. 10. Please describe
the graduation ceremony. There was 1200 soldiers graduating, one
of the largest groups so they did not call them out
individually. They graduated each company as a group. 11. Is there a
website for his basic training unit? Is there a place to see
pictures of his training online? There is a website.
http://www.jackson.army.mil/BCT/BCT.htm.
You can view photos but the site never updates, it does not hurt
to check though. Each Battalion has a website, followed by a
company website. You can read about their sergeants. Their is
also the Fort Jackson newspaper, The Leader. I found a picture
of my husband training in there once :) I read it online every
week. The link is
http://www.fortjacksonleader.com/
12. Any other tips or information?
Do not be discouraged if you do not hear from your soldier as
soon as others do. Every company, platoon and sergeant is
different. Things will vary. Hang in there and it will be
graduation time before you know it! **************************************** We are currently seeking writers to contribute about their soldier's experience during basic training. Since training, contact and the overall atmosphere can vary greatly from one basic training post to the next, I thought this would be helpful. If you would like to contribute your experience to help other Army family members, please email me this completed questionnaire. Thank you for your help!
